Fanfiction

Over the years, Thomas and I have written a fair bit of fanfiction between us, most of which will eventually make its collective way to this website. A lot of the titles were posted to the newsgroup alt.drwho.creative, some elsewhere. Tom's work is exclusively Doctor Who, while my own is scattered among Doctor Who, ReBoot, and Randall and Hopkirk (deceased).

Some of those stories have been revised since they were posted, in which case I'll eventually post it here, after I've managed to find the time to HTML and format it correctly. Here, for your convenience, is a list and short summary of what we've written so far, and where it appears if applicable. If you want to read any of this stuff, drop us a line and ask, if there is no link to the story available.

Summary: Frustrated by his insomnia and his loss of drawing skills, the Doctor takes a sabbatical in 15th-century Florence.

Published in charity collection 'Missing Pieces', edited by Shaun Lyon and Mark Phippen.

'Food for Thought'

- features Pete (the fainting morgue attendant) from the TVM. Set directly after the events in the movie.

Summary: Pete and his sister discuss the weird goings-on of New Year's Eve in a Chinese restaurant.

Published in 'The Cat Who Walked Through Time' fanzine.

'The Diary Saga'

- featuring the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann and a host of extras.

Summary: Sabalom Glitz steals the Doctor's 900-year diary, and a chase ensues to retrieve it, including a stopoff at a Doctor Who convention...

Parts include:
'Diary Excerpt' - The Doctor meets with Glitz again and loses a vital possession...
'Time Slip in Paris' - France, 1979. The Doctor meets an old friend or two...

'Memories'

- featuring Ace and the 7th Doctor.

Summary:A tribute to the Challenger shuttle crew of 1986.

'Messing About in Boats' (1999)

- EF piece, written as a dare. Features the Eighth Doctor.

Summary: Adult fiction, rated 18. Posted on the PMEB-EF list.

Work by Alryssa Kelly

Doctor Who Fanfiction

'Origins' (2001)

- Features the Eighth Doctor and Alecia Connell. (Self-Insert)

Summary: In present-day Dublin, Ireland, a meningitis outbreak at Trinity College takes on sinister connotations when the Doctor discovers a pattern that leads to the black market of biological warfare...

Author Rating: Probably the best SI/Doctor story I wrote. I researched it pretty comprehensively and did my best to make the SI likeable. It's the only one I'll re-read. :P

This story is on fanfiction.net, and can be read here.

'And So it Begins...' (2001)

- Features Sailor Gallifrey, an unusual Sailor Senshi.

Summary: Sailor Gallifrey has a conversation with an old friend.

This is posted on fanfiction.net, and can be read here

'Easter Rising' (2000)

- Written in tandem with Tom Kelly. Features the Eighth Doctor and Alecia Connell.

Summary: In 1916 Dublin, the Doctor finds himself embroiled in a rebel uprising that he knows cannot be tampered with.

Author Rating: It's so-so.

This story was published in British fanzine 'Eye of Orion' and is also available here at fanfiction.net

'Persistence of Memory' (1996)

- featuring the Eighth Doctor and companions Alecia Connell and Jayne Wallace.

Summary: After an encounter with the Rani, Alecia is dead and the Doctor has little time left. Even if they make it to Gallifrey, can the Rani's experiment be reversed?

Author Rating: I disown this fanfiction these days, it being probably the first I ever made public. Read it if you must, but it's god-awful Mary Sue-ism. I only list it now in the name of completism. Thankfully I've grown past that now :)

This was posted to alt.drwho.creative and to the PMEB list.

'Dramatis Personae' (1997)

- featuring the Eighth Doctor, Alryssa and Paul McGann.

Summary: The Eighth Doctor and his companion are sent to catch a dangerous criminal, and have to enlist the help of a reluctant Paul McGann in the process...

Author Rating: More a fun bit of fic than anything else. The plot's predictable, but the only reason for writing it was to have Paul and the Eighth Doctor turn up in the same place. I met Paul after writing this and discovered my portrayal was more accurate than I realised. :) It's a no-brainer fic (although Kate Orman mentioned she liked the hairbrush scene). Just for fun.

This piece was posted on the PMEB mailing list and I believe on alt.drwho.creative.

'Forbidden Territory' (2001)

- Features the Eighth Doctor, Alecia Connell and Jayne Wallace.

Summary: The TARDIS crew venture onto ancient holy ground in search of what happened to the Ark of the Covenant...

Author Rating: Ugh. It seemed like such a good idea to begin with. It took me three years to actually finish the thing, and my writing has improved so dramatically, it's painful to see the difference. It's OK, I guess. But nothing I'm proud of anymore.

Posted to the newsgroup alt.drwho.creative and to PMEB

'8 x 8' (2001)

- Approx. 150-word story, written for the 35th anniversary. Features the Eighth Doctor and Alryssa.

Summary: The Doctor and his friend play a game of chess.

This piece was posted on alt.drwho.creative.

'Giacomo' (1997)

- features the Eighth Doctor and Alryssa.

Summary: The Doctor orchestrates a surprise visit to Edwardian Italy for one of Alryssa's favourite operas.

Author Rating: Ewww... stay away from it. Really. Grossly over-saccharined. I can't bear to look at it. It won't be going up here.

'Let's Try The Pub' (2001)

- Very short story. Features the Eighth Doctor, Alryssa, Paul McGann.

Summary: The Doctor and his companion visit Bristol.

Author Rating: Tongue-in-cheek very short piece, just for fun. Random wrote the original version.

This piece was posted to alt.drwho.creative

'This Time Round: Knocking on the Door' (2000)

- features Ryssal, Alryssa and Polly.

Summary: Two new arrivals at the Pub Outside Continuity. Posted on alt.drwho.creative.

Author Rating: Another just-for-fun short bit, playing on the notion of an alternate version of myself, Ryssal, created as a joke by Stephen Cole ('The Ancestor Cell')

'This Time Round' was created by Tyler Dion after the Subreality Cafe, created by Kielle.

'This Time Round: 1st Round Robin' (2000)

- Co-written with Imran Inayat, Gordon Dempster, Cameron Mason and Bradley Keith Willis.

Summary: Someone's out to destroy This Time Round... but who? Features a cast of almost literally thousands, including the author avatars, Barney, Sailor Gallifrey, Death from the Discworld novels and Pinky and the Brain.

Author Rating: The first round-robin I'd ever participated in, and the whole thing was just a lot of fun to do. No seriousness intended throughout - just a good laugh.

This piece was posted during 2000 on alt.drwho.creative

'...and the beating of butterfly wings' (2000)

- Features the Eighth Doctor. Requires some background on the Eighth Doctor novels up to The Turing Test.

Summary: The Doctor is tormented with memories that linger just out of reach...

Author Rating: I just got inspired to do this as an alternate ending to the amnesiac Doctor arc while reading Turing Test by Paul Leonard. One of my better efforts :)

Posted on alt.drwho.creative and is available on fanfiction.net

'Broken Dreams' (2000)

- Features the Eighth Doctor.

Summary: A feral cat colony caretaker encounters a strange man known as the Doctor during her grief over the loss of one of her cats.

Author Rating: So-so. Not terribly bad, but not as good as say, the one above.

Published in 'The Cat Who Walked Through Time'.

Original Fiction

Merch Y Ddraig (Daughter of the Dragon) (1998)

- Features Paul McGann in a 'role' as an English soldier caught up in a fictional civil war between England and Wales in the year 1797.

Author Rating: Not too bad, for my first and only historical story; but my ultimate intention was to make it into a screenplay and cover more than a short story could possibly encompass. One day I'll do it.

Posted on the PMEB's webzine, 'Dreamtime'

'Lord Of The Rings' Fiction

'End of Days' (2002)

Summary: A very, very short ficlet inspired by Arwen's flash-forward scene in The Two Towers.

Author's Rating: Not a bad short piece, if I do say so myself :) My only LoTR piece to date, and probably my last; I've never read through the entirety of the books at all. It just grabbed me and forced me to write it. I'm currently reading the Silmarillion and will move on to LoTR as time allows.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net).

ReBoot Fiction

If you don't know what ReBoot is, shame on you. Go here, and be thou educated.

'Guardian Legacy' (2001)

- Set during Season 2, in Mainframe.

Summary: A ferocious fight between two creatures eventually terminates in Mainframe; and it appears that Bob has been terminated with them...

Author Rating: First ReBoot fic, therefore a little goofy. Although Bob is goofy by nature... anyway. I had plans for a little B5-style subplot there, which I haven't gotten back to yet. It's not too bad as fics go.

Posted on Julia Cat's website, and also at fanfiction.net

'Gemini' (2002))

- Set during Season 2, in Mainframe.

Summary: Bob, Dot and Enzo find themselves trapped in a duplicate Mainframe, with no apparent way out...

Author Rating: Won't win any Pulitzer prizes, but I don't experience any cringing while reading it - although I've made some changes to the text several times. Despite my promises to myself, I ended up introducing Robin in this story. She was never intended to be popular with the cast or even the readership, so if you don't like her, well, that's what I intended to do. There was a bit of a storm over on my fanfiction.net reviews because of it; but my intentions were to get this character to earn the right to be liked, and not be trusted straightaway; since many stories fall prey to having the new person be instantly friends with the cast. Robin's not pleasant; and it's directly attributable to the really odd nature of her beginnings. Sort of how Bob *might* have turned out, if he hadn't had such a good time of it.

Posted on Julia Cat's website, The ReBoot Fictive's Corner and also on fanfiction.net

'Turning Point' (2002))

- Set some time after 'Gemini'.

Summary: Robin's settled in somewhat as the chief mechanic in the P.O's maintenance bay, but it seems like the 'Net has other ideas for her, and she's not too happy about it.

Author's Rating: This is actually the third publically released Robinfic; 'Mourning After' was the first, theoretically, even though it's set during season 3. Appropriately with its title, it seems this was the fic that changed some opinions of the character, which told me I must be doing *something* right with her. I'm not going to point out the irony of the story's ID number at ff.net ending in '452'. Nope...

This story can be read here. (fanfiction.net) or here at The ReBoot Fictives Corner

End Transmission (2003)

- Set just after the end of season 2, in Turing system.

Summary: Dot Matrix places a difficult call to Turing System. She's got bad news for Bob's doppelganger, Robin - and a hard decision to make...

Author's Rating: Turing System, and the characters of Perl and Dennis, belong to Timesprite, and are all used with permission. One of my most recently-completed fics; I'm fond of it; but then I have some bias.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net) or at The ReBoot Fictives Corner.

Inner Demons, Part 1: Breakdown (2002)

- Set during the mid-point between seasons two and three; in Turing System. Follows on from 'End Transmission'.

Summary: Turing System's head of security has to find out why their chief mechanic, Robin, has suddenly gone AWOL - and doesn't like what she finds.

Author's Rating: This is what I call my 'non-mainstream' ReBoot fic. It begins to delve into the darker, more adult issues (particularly self-mutilation and later, rape) that some may not find easy to read. It's much less humour and more character study, and involves no canon cast members at all. You're free to read it, but don't complain to me that it's not canon, because I keep it separate from canon for a reason. Robin's the kind of character I can do this kind of stuff with, and I rather like taking people outside their comfort zones at the same time. My canon stuff is over there. *points*

You can read it here (fanfiction.net) or at The ReBoot Fictives Corner

'Inner Demons, Part 2: Critical Mass' (2003)

- Follows directly on in a continuing arc from 'Inner Demons: Part 1'. Co-written with Timesprite.

Summary: A late-night argument between Robin and Perl leads to a devastating chain of events...

You can read it here (fanfiction.net) or at The ReBoot Fictives Corner

'Inner Demons, Part 3: Fallout' (2003)

- Following on and concluding the arc from Inner Demons: Pts 1 and 2.

Summary: A Game injury uncovers the secret Perl has been keeping from Dennis, and as the truth of her ordeal is revealed, Robin witnesses a startling behaviour change in the Command.com...

Still writing, as of this time.

'The First Night' 2002

- Set just after the end of season 3.

Summary: Bob and Dot's fledgling relationship falters in the face of a startling revelation...

Author's Rating: I rewrote the ending of this one, after being rightfully told that Dot's behaviour was... a bit off. I think it works well now.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), or at Julia Cat's ReBoot Corner.

'The Mourning After' (2002)

- Set directly after 'The First Night'. Features Bob and Robin.

Summary: Bob needs to come to terms with his past, and ends up paying a visit to his double, Robin.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), at Julia Cat's ReBoot Corner, or at The ReBoot Fictives Corner.

'Crescendo' (2002)

- Set after 'The First Night'(post-season 3). Features Bob and Dot.

Summary: Dot talks to Bob in an attempt to understand the secrecy behind 'the great experiment'.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), or at Julia Cat's ReBoot Corner.

'Hope' (2002)

- Set directly after season 4.

Summary: In the depths of the Principal Office, Dot Matrix finds herself faced with the awesome tasks of evicting Megabyte - and piecing a tattered relationship back together...

Author's Rating: Probably one of, if not my best, piece of ReBoot fiction to date. I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. It doesn't instantly resolve everything between the two of them, but it's got tension and energy there. I got some very positive reviews for this one.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), or at Julia Cat's ReBoot Corner.

'Night Magic' (2002)

- Set some time waaaay off in the future, after season 4.

Summary: Warning: Excessive Sugar Alert! - Bob's 2-year-old daughter Adena is having nightmares, and he comes up with a rather ingenious way to solve them...

Author's Rating: I don't normally do fluff, but for Thren, who owns Adena, I made an exception. :) Bob makes a great dad, and it shows in this fic. Overly soppy and fluffy, but I think it's cute, regardless.

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), or at the ReBoot Fictives Corner.

'Dress Sense' (2003)

- Set, again, in the far future, featuring Adena once more.

Summary: Humour. Dot discovers Bob's horrendous colour coordination skills.

Author's Rating: Too short for anything other than a scenelet (211 words), but too cute to pass up. Just for fun. What is it with men and bad fashion sense, anyway?

You can read it here (fanfiction.net), or at the ReBoot Fictives Corner

'A Late Night At The Office' (2003)

- Set between seasons three and four, with Glitch-Bob and Dot.

Summary: Um... there is no plot. It's just smut. :P

'Necropolis: MST'd' (2002)

- My first MST'd fanfiction.

Summary: The original version of this fic, available (unfortunately) on fanfiction.net, is so incredibly, mindbogglingly awful as to defy belief. So, with Teluekh, I set about MST'ing it; using Megabyte, Bob and Robin as the MST'ers. The author turns Hexadecimal into a Mary Sue, one of the single worst crimes I can think of. I think we did a fairly good job of sending it up. It came second in the URA's for 2003.

You can read it here.
